Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (UDWR) wants to find out why bighorn sheep populations have remained stagnant and mountain goat populations have significantly declined along the highest peaks of the Wasatch Front declined in the past 15 years. UDWR has proposed to use helicopters in the Twin Peaks, Lone Peak, and Mount Timpanogos wilderness areas to capture and collar 10 bighorn sheep and 20 mountain goats. Once an animal is collared, biologists can easily locate it when it dies and quickly collect it to determine the cause of death.
Biologists must access rugged and remote wilderness areas to collar and collect the animals. Helicopters are the fastest, safest and most efficient way to gather the information they need.
The Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest and the Salt Lake and Pleasant Grove Ranger Districts are requesting public comments on this proposal, which must be received by Thursday, August 10, 2017.

Project: UDWR mountain goat and bighorn sheep capture and collar via helicopter in wilderness
As a regular user of the Lone Peak, Twin Peaks and Mount Timpanogos wilderness areas, I support of the Utah Division of Wildlife’s proposed use of helicopters to facilitate research on mountain goat and bighorn sheep populations in these areas. I feel strongly that both bighorn sheep and mountain goats are vital and iconic symbols of the wildlife and wild. State wildlife agencies must be given the tools necessary to actively manage our public land resources for both viewing and recreational purposes.

We must allow the Utah Division of Wildlife to maintain and manage the wildlife found within all wilderness areas including mechanized means such as helicopters. Mountain goat and bighorn sheep of the Lone Peak, Twin Peaks and Mount Timpanogos wilderness areas should be treated as the important and irreplaceable wild treasures that they are for everyone to enjoy. Please allow the Utah Division of Wildlife the use of helicopters in the Twin Peaks, Lone Peak, and Mount Timpanogos wilderness areas to capture and collar bighorn sheep and mountain goats. Thank you.
