Today Secretary Ryan Zinke announced recommendations to substantially reduce the size, scope, and restrictions on Bears Ears Monument in Southern Utah. This is a significant win for sportsmen and conservation of wild game herds in Southern Utah!
We are greatly encouraged by this development. For decades, sportsmen and the State of Utah have been tremendous stewards for this area. Today’s announcement will help ensure that these areas will remain open for hunting. It also means that Utah will continue to take the lead on managing these big game hunting units. In fact, the memorandum specifically states that, “…much of the land is compatible with multiple use practices, including recreation, grazing…hunting, fishing, and wood-gathering.”
Here is why this is so important. Over 50,000 sportsmen apply for hunting permits on these units every year. For years, sportsmen have been conducting transplants as well as habitat and water conservation projects to ensure these herds remain robust and healthy. Bears Ears Monument designation threaten these proven conservation efforts. The restrictions which follow monument designations also threaten our right to hunt the world class herds of Mule Deer, Rocky Mountain Elk, and Desert Bighorn Sheep which we have worked so hard to restore.
We commend Secretary Ryan Zinke for listening to Utah’s sportsmen and ensuring protections for sportsmen, wildlife, and Utah’s hard working rural communities. We appreciate the hundreds of messages sent by Utah BigGame Forever members regarding the monument designation. Your messages make a huge impact on these important policy decisions.
